The oil in your differential has no filter. Metal from the gears stays in that oil until someone drains it. That’s why differential fluid change cost in Vancouver is worth knowing before a small job turns into a rebuild or a replacement.

This guide uses prices and intervals published by shops in Vancouver, Burnaby and Langley, by two Calgary shops and by US price guides. You’ll see what one service costs and what to ask before you book.

What’s New in Differential Fluid Change Prices for 2026

A Calgary lube shop’s price list, updated in July 2026, shows a differential or transfer case oil service from $129.99. That covers parts and labour for up to 3 litres of oil.

A US price guide dated July 2026 puts the job on one differential at about $100 to $200, in US dollars. With front and rear units, it says $200 to $400. A US repair company gives a higher range for 2026: between $180 and $320.

A US cost site reviewed its prices in August 2026. Its rough Canadian estimate is C$80 to C$200, and it rates its own price confidence as low.

What Differential Fluid Change Cost in Vancouver Covers

A differential is a set of gears between the drive wheels. In a turn, the outside wheel travels farther than the inside one, so it has to spin faster. The differential lets that happen while both wheels still get power. Without it, the tires would drag or skid.

Those gears sit in thick gear oil. Over time the oil breaks down from heat and takes on moisture. It also collects fine metal particles from normal gear wear. It gets far less attention than engine oil.

A Burnaby shop lists what a differential service includes. The mechanic drains the old oil, then checks the housing and the drain plug for metal. The seals and gaskets get checked for leaks. Then the unit is refilled with the fluid the maker calls for, and the shop says the job usually takes under an hour.

On some differentials, the cover has to come off to drain the oil. You may need a new gasket. A limited-slip differential also needs a friction modifier additive.

Differential Fluid Change Cost in Vancouver by the Numbers

No Metro Vancouver shop page behind this guide posts a price for this job, so the nearest published figures come from Calgary and from US guides:

  • Calgary lube shop, one differential or transfer case: from $129.99 for parts and labour, up to 3 litres
  • Rough Canadian estimate from a US cost site, per axle: C$80 to C$200
  • US price guides, one differential: $100–$200 in US dollars
  • US price guides, both front and rear differentials: $200–$400 in US dollars

The same US cost site breaks one job into three lines, in US dollars:

Price check One fluid service, three lines

Gear oil: $20–$50
Labour: $30–$100
Total: $50–$150
From one US cost site, in US dollars, for one axle. The orange bar is the total.

Published prices from Canada are thin. A Calgary shop says garages there charge $120–$170 per hour, and a US guide puts the job at 0.5 to 2.0 hours.

If your quote sits well above these numbers, ask what’s in it. It may cover more than one unit, a pricier oil, or a seal repair.

Why AWD and 4WD Vehicles Pay More

What you pay in Vancouver depends on how many units need fresh oil. A rear-wheel-drive car has one differential, at the back. A front-wheel-drive car usually has its differential inside the transaxle, where it shares fluid with the transmission.

Vehicles that drive all four wheels have more. A Burnaby shop explains that these systems send power through a mix of differentials and a centre transfer case. Each one needs its own oil service. It adds that the front differential on four-wheel-drive trucks is often overlooked.

One US repair company says transfer case fluid adds around $75 to $200 to the bill, in US dollars. The fluid type matters too. Conventional oil is cheaper, and synthetic costs more. A locking differential is pricier to service than a plain open one.

A Fluid Service Next to a Rear Differential Rebuild or Replacement

Fresh oil is the cheap end of differential repair. The other end is expensive. A Calgary shop lists a front differential rebuild at $900–$2,200. It puts a complete rear differential replacement at $1,500–$4,000+, and a front differential replacement at $1,500–$3,500+.

That shop puts a rebuild at 6 to 10 hours and a full replacement at 8 to 14 hours. A US price guide lists a rebuild at $1,000 to $2,500+, in US dollars.

Worn or low oil is how a differential gets there. Heat builds, and the gears and bearings wear faster. A US guide names the usual leak points: the pinion seal, the axle seals and the cover gasket.

Looked after, a differential lasts a long time. The same Calgary shop puts a front differential at 150,000–250,000 km and a rear differential at 200,000–300,000 km.

Differential Fluid Change Costs by Vehicle: Rear-Wheel-Drive Car, AWD SUV and 4WD Truck

US price guides give these ranges by vehicle type, in US dollars:

Price check Differential service by vehicle type

Rear-wheel-drive car, one rear differential: $100–$200
AWD SUV or 4WD truck, both front and rear differentials: $200–$400
Transfer case fluid on a truck, added to the bill: $75–$200
Limited-slip or transfer case service with full synthetic oil and a possible new seal: $260–$320
From US price guides, in US dollars.

In one guide’s example, a rear-wheel-drive car with no leak and no noise had its differential serviced for $160.

Trucks and SUVs that tow or go off-road need the service more often, so the cost comes around sooner.

Signs Your Differential or Transfer Case Needs Fresh Gear Oil

A Burnaby shop lists the warnings to act on:

  • Whining or howling: A whine that rises with speed points to worn gears or worn-out fluid.
  • Grinding or clunking on turns: Noise in corners often means worn gears inside the unit.
  • Fluid leak under the axle: The oil is thick and dark, and a leak means a seal or gasket needs work.
  • Burning smell: Overheated oil gives off a sulphur-like smell.

How long does the oil last? Shops in Vancouver and nearby give close answers. The Burnaby shop says most makers call for the service every 40,000 to 80,000 km. A Langley shop says 50,000–70,000 km, and sooner if the vehicle does towing or other heavy work. One garage in Vancouver says “Every 48,000KM or 30 months (whichever comes first).”

A Calgary shop says 50,000–100,000 km for city driving, and 30,000–50,000 km for heavy towing or harsh winters. Your owner’s manual has the interval for your vehicle.

Don’t wait once you hear a noise or see a leak. A US repair guide warns that driving with low fluid, loud grinding or strong vibration can damage the gears and the bearings. Book an inspection quickly.

How to Compare Differential Fluid Change Quotes in Vancouver

A fair quote answers five questions:

Service desk Differential quote check

  • Units: Which ones are in the price: the rear differential, the front differential, the transfer case?
  • Oil type: Is it the oil the maker calls for, and is it conventional or synthetic?
  • Additive: Does the differential need a friction modifier, and is it included?
  • Inspection: Will the mechanic check the old oil and the drain plug for signs of wear, and the seals for leaks?
  • Warranty: What does the shop cover on parts and labour, and for how long?

Get a written estimate before work starts. A US estimate page says the price can differ between a dealership and an independent shop. One US cost site warns about a common upsell: both differentials and the transfer case sold at once. That can be fine if all three are due, so ask the shop to show you the interval.

The right oil matters more than the lowest price. A Burnaby shop calls the wrong gear oil in a limited-slip differential a common and costly mistake. A Fraser Valley drivetrain shop says it makes the unit groan on turns.

FAQ

How much does a differential fluid service cost?

One Calgary lube shop lists the service from $129.99, parts and labour. US price guides put one differential at $100–$200 in US dollars, and $200–$400 for front and rear together. The local shop pages behind this guide don’t post a price, so ask for a written quote.

How often should differential fluid be changed?

A Burnaby shop says most makers call for it every 40,000 to 80,000 km. A Langley shop says 50,000–70,000 km. Go sooner if you tow, drive off-road or deal with harsh winters. Your owner’s manual lists the interval for your vehicle.

What does a differential service include?

A mechanic drains the old oil and looks it over for signs of trouble inside. The housing and gaskets get a check too. Then the unit is refilled with the fluid the maker specifies, plus an additive where one is needed. It usually takes under an hour.

Can a neglected differential cause transmission damage?

In most vehicles the two are separate units, a Burnaby shop explains, but they work as one system. A badly worn differential can cause vibration that strains the driveshaft. On some all-wheel-drive systems it can affect the transmission directly. Regular service protects the whole drivetrain.

Can I drive with a leaking differential?

It’s not worth the risk. Low oil can destroy the gears and bearings, a US repair guide warns. A differential that locks or breaks while you drive can make the vehicle unsafe. If you see fresh oil under the vehicle, have it inspected right away.

Verdict on Differential Service Prices in Vancouver

No shop page behind this guide posts a local price. So the fair markers for differential fluid change cost in Vancouver are the published ones: from $129.99 at one Calgary lube shop, and $100–$200 per differential in US guides. A vehicle with two differentials and a transfer case will cost more.

Ask which units the quote covers and which gear oil goes in. Then set that small bill next to a differential rebuild or a replacement, and the service is easy to justify.
