A new muffler is one of the cheaper repairs a car can need. The catch is rust. Once the car is up on a lift, the pipes and hangers around the old muffler often turn out to be just as worn. That’s why muffler replacement cost in Vancouver is hard to guess from the driveway.
This guide uses figures published by Canadian repair garages, a directory of shops in Vancouver and 2026 cost guides. You’ll see what a fair price looks like, what pushes it up, and what to ask before you say yes.
What’s New in Muffler Replacement Prices for 2026
Four sets of 2026 numbers frame this year’s costs. An Ontario shop published a cost guide in September 2026. It puts a standard muffler at $200 to $600, with parts and labour. A Quebec garage wrote in April 2026 that an installed muffler usually costs $200 to $500.
In the US, a national repair estimator updated its figure in September 2026. It puts the average muffler replacement between $1,138 and $1,190, in US dollars and before taxes. Almost all of that is the part, which it lists between $1,034 and $1,037.
A US guide from June 2026 lands far lower. It says most drivers pay $150–$400 at an independent garage, with an OEM-style muffler.
What Muffler Replacement Cost in Vancouver Covers
The muffler is the large chamber near the rear of the exhaust system. Its job is to cut engine noise.
A muffler replacement quote covers the new muffler and the labour to fit it. It also covers small hardware: clamps and gaskets, plus the rubber hangers that hold the exhaust up. So two quotes only compare when they cover the same parts.
Muffler Replacement Cost in Vancouver by the Numbers
For drivers in Vancouver, three sources in Canada give the headline ranges:
- Standard muffler, Ontario guide: $200 to $600
- Installed muffler, Quebec garage: $200 to $500
- Muffler and catalytic converter services, Vancouver directory: $129 to $1999
The Ontario guide also lists the jobs around a muffler:
Price check Jobs around a muffler
The Vancouver directory doesn’t split mufflers from catalytic converters, so its range is wide. An older list of muffler shops in Vancouver says muffler repair won’t cost more than CAD 850. An older page from a second Ontario shop says $150 to $400.
If your quote sits far above these ranges, ask what’s in it. A US guide says corroded parts next to the muffler are the most common reason a final bill passes the estimate.
Why Rust and Road Salt Drive a Muffler Estimate
The muffler itself is a quick job. A Surrey garage says a typical muffler fix takes 30 to 60 minutes. That second Ontario shop lists labour at $80 to $150 per hour.
Corrosion is what stretches the job. The Ontario guide calls it a major cost factor, more so on cars driven through winter weather and salt. Rusted bolts can break during removal. The metal around them can be too weak to hold a new muffler, so more sections have to go.
One US guide puts a number on it. When corroded clamps or pipe ends crumble during removal, a $250 job becomes a $600 job.
Some cars use a simple bolt-on muffler that’s quick to swap. Others have an exhaust that is welded together, so the mechanic has to cut the old muffler out and weld the new one in.
Mufflers also corrode from the inside. Condensation collects in them, and one US guide says that’s how most fail. A Surrey garage lists cold weather and road salt among the things that wear a muffler out early. Wet winters in Vancouver don’t help.
Muffler Only, or a Bigger Exhaust System Repair
Not every loud exhaust needs a new muffler. An Ontario guide says a loose heat shield, a cracked pipe, a worn hanger or a failing catalytic converter can all cause the same symptoms. That’s why a good mechanic checks the full system before quoting.
Small leaks are cheaper to fix. For welding or another minor repair, the Quebec garage puts the cost at $80 to $150. A repair makes sense when the muffler itself is still solid.
Replacement makes sense when the muffler has large holes, heavy corrosion or damage inside, the Ontario guide says.
The other parts have their own costs. A US guide says a resonator, the smaller canister ahead of the muffler, can often be replaced on its own for $150–$300. Single sections of pipe run $75–$250 plus labour, also in US dollars.
The catalytic converter is the expensive surprise. The same US guide calls it a $1,500–$3,500 repair. So make sure you know which part the quote is for.
Muffler Replacement Costs by Vehicle: Civic, F-150 and BMW
The Canadian pages don’t list muffler costs by model. A US guide from June 2026 does, in US dollars:

A US repair estimator runs higher. It lists a Honda Civic at $674-$716, a Toyota Corolla at $625-$661 and a Ford F-150 at $766-$830. So treat both sets as a guide to the gap between vehicles, not as costs in Vancouver.
Compact cars cost less to fix than SUVs or trucks, the Quebec garage says. The second Ontario shop adds that a luxury car muffler costs more than one for a standard sedan.
Parts matter too. The US guide says aftermarket mufflers cost 40–60% less than OEM. Stainless steel costs more than plain steel, but it lasts longer.
Signs Your Exhaust System Needs Work, and How Long a Muffler Lasts
An exhaust gives warnings before it fails:
- Noise: The car is suddenly louder, with a roar or rumble when you speed up.
- Rattling: A rattling sound under the car points to a failed hanger or a loose baffle inside the muffler.
- Smell: Exhaust in the cabin means fumes are getting in.
- Hanging parts: The tailpipe is dangling or dragging, or you can see holes rusted through.
Mufflers last between 40,000 and 80,000 miles, one Surrey garage says. Potholes and lots of short trips shorten that.
Don’t wait on a smell. Exhaust gas holds carbon monoxide, which has no odour. An exhaust leak can let it into the car, mostly when the windows are closed or the engine is idling. If you notice exhaust in the cabin, avoid any driving you don’t need and get the car inspected as soon as you can.
Leaks also grow. Left alone, a leaking joint wears out the metal next to it, a US guide says. A small one is cheaper to fix early, before the damage spreads.
A check engine light can come on with an exhaust leak too. Not every exhaust noise is the muffler, so ask for an inspection first.
How to Compare Muffler Replacement Quotes in Vancouver
A fair muffler quote in Vancouver answers five questions:
Service desk Muffler quote check
- Part: Is the muffler OEM or aftermarket, and is it plain steel or stainless steel?
- Scope: Is it the muffler only, or pipes and hangers too?
- Fit: Does it bolt on, or does the mechanic need to cut and weld?
- Labour: How many hours, and are supplies and any diagnostic charge included?
- Warranty: What’s covered on parts and on the work, and for how long?
Get an itemized estimate in writing before work starts. One Ontario garage suggests getting more than one quote, and a US guide says to call three. That guide calls a 1-year warranty on parts the usual minimum.
Be wary of the lowest bid. The Ontario guide warns that the cheapest fix isn’t the best deal if the metal around it will fail within a few months. If a quote lists parts you didn’t expect, ask to see the worn metal.
FAQ
How long does it take a mechanic to replace a muffler?
A typical muffler fix takes 30 to 60 minutes, one Surrey garage says. A US guide allows 1 to 2 hours for a replacement. It takes longer if the bolts are rusted, if welding is needed, or if more of the exhaust needs work.
How long does a muffler last?
Mufflers last between 40,000 and 80,000 miles, according to a Surrey garage. US guides say 5 to 8 years, or up to 10. Salted roads and potholes wear them out sooner. Washing the underside of the car helps slow the corrosion.
Can you drive with a bad muffler?
The engine will keep running, but don’t put the repair off. A failed muffler or a leaking exhaust can let fumes into the cabin, and carbon monoxide has no odour. If you notice exhaust inside the car, drive it as little as you can and book an inspection.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a muffler?
A repair is cheaper when the fault is small. A Quebec garage puts minor repairs such as welding at $80 to $150, against $200 to $500 for an installed muffler. A muffler that’s rusted through should be replaced. A patch on thin, corroded metal can fail again soon.
What is the difference between the muffler and the exhaust?
The exhaust is the whole system that carries gases away from the engine and out the back of the car. It includes the catalytic converter, the exhaust pipe and the muffler. The muffler is one part of that system, and its job is to cut noise.
Verdict on Muffler Repair Prices in Vancouver
No page gives a Vancouver-only figure for a single muffler. The best guide to muffler replacement cost in Vancouver is what Canadian shops publish. That’s $200 to $600 for a standard muffler in one Ontario guide, and $500 to $1,500 or more once the rear exhaust section goes too.
