AGM vs standard car battery? Your car decides, not you. If it came with an AGM, an AGM goes back in.

A standard flooded battery is fine for older, simpler cars with no start-stop.

An AGM makes sense here:

  • Start-stop cars: an AGM or EFB, since the engine restarts dozens of times per drive
  • Lots of electronics: big screens and heated seats use a lot of power
  • Short trips in the cold: an AGM can be worth it too

Why must the same type go back in? Many newer cars adjust the charging voltage as the battery wears. Put a flooded battery in an AGM car and that charging cooks it. One Ontario mechanic says the savings last about a year.

That’s also why many cars need the new battery registered. Skip it and the car can overcharge or undercharge it.

An upgrade isn’t always safe either. Some start-stop cars built for an EFB won’t work with an AGM.
