The first exhaust leak symptoms you’ll notice are usually sounds. Your engine gets louder, often with a rumble when you speed up. You may also hear popping, hissing or ticking.
Other signs to watch for:
- Smell: you smell exhaust inside the car
- Shaking: the gas pedal or the floor vibrates
- Weak pickup: the car loses power when you press the gas
- More fill-ups: you stop for gas more often
Why does it matter? Exhaust has carbon monoxide in it, and you can’t see it or smell it. If it gets into the cabin, it can make you dizzy or give you a headache.
The risk goes up when the leak is near the engine or under the cabin. Rust from road salt and rough roads are the usual causes.
If you smell exhaust inside the car or feel dizzy while driving, stop driving. Pull over safely and get some fresh air. Have the car towed or checked before you drive it again.
