Should you resurface or replace brake rotors? In 2026, most shops replace them.
Resurfacing means cutting a thin layer off the rotor on a lathe to make it smooth again. It used to be common. One US guide now calls rotor machining “effectively dead”. Modern rotors are thin, and the lathe time costs about as much as a new rotor.
New rotors aren’t costly on most cars. A Canadian parts retailer puts front rotors between $60 and $150 each.
Replace your rotors if you see any of these:
- Heavy grooves: you can feel ridges with a fingernail
- Rust or a blue tint: signs of heat and age
- A pulsing brake pedal: the rotor is likely warped
- Thin metal: the rotor is below the minimum thickness
You can keep your rotors when they are smooth and still thick enough. Rotors often last through two or three sets of brake pads.
Ask the shop to measure them and show you the number. For full prices, read our guide to brake pad replacement cost in Vancouver.
