A clutch taken apart, in the order the parts sit between the gearbox and the engine.

The signs a clutch is slipping are easy to spot. The engine revs climb, but the car doesn’t speed up to match. Most often the clutch disc is worn and can’t grip the flywheel.

Watch for these four signs:

  • Revs with no pull: the engine races but the car barely speeds up
  • Worse in high gears: it shows most in top gears and on hills
  • A burning smell: the slipping clutch is running hot
  • A high pedal: the clutch only grabs near the top

A slipping clutch doesn’t heal. It only gets worse with time, and in most cases the fix is a new clutch.

Waiting costs you more. Slipping makes heat, and heat can damage the flywheel and the pressure plate. One US parts retailer says flywheel damage can add US$100 to US$500 to the bill.

It isn’t safe either. A slipping clutch can leave you stranded.
