Where the routine work is on a tractor.

Universal tractor fluid vs hydraulic fluid comes down to what shares the oil. If the gearbox, the hydraulics and the wet brakes use one sump, your tractor needs tractor fluid, not plain hydraulic oil.

Tractor fluid goes by names like UTF or THF. It has friction modifiers that stop wet brakes from chattering.

Plain anti-wear hydraulic oil, sold as AW-32, AW-46 or AW-68, is different. One US tractor dealer says it lacks the friction modifiers wet brakes need. A US farm co-op warns it can harm seals and wet brake linings.

Watch for these signs of the wrong fluid:

  • Brake chatter: a grab or shudder when you brake
  • Slow hydraulics: the loader or hitch lifts slowly
  • Leaks: seals start to weep

Caught early, a drain and refill with the right fluid usually fixes it. Some older tractors have separate systems that each need their own oil.

Use the fluid spec in your operator’s manual. Our Surrey and Port Moody shops carry farm machinery and equipment parts. For the full list, read our tractor maintenance checklist.
