Here are WHMIS labels explained in plain words. A supplier label shows what the product is and how to use it safely. Each hazardous product must have a label and a safety data sheet (SDS).
The label names the product and its Canadian maker or importer. Then come the hazard parts:
- Pictograms: Symbols in a red square turned on its point.
- Signal word: “Danger” for high-risk hazards, “Warning” for less severe ones.
- Hazard statements: Short lines on the exact hazard.
- Precautionary statements: Steps to prevent harm from handling or storage.
Supplier labels must be in English and French. The label must match the SDS, which has more detail.
A workplace label is needed when a product is poured into another container, or its supplier label is lost or unreadable. It usually shows the product name, safe handling steps and a reference to the SDS.
Don’t use a product with no label or an unreadable one. Tell your employer if a label is missing.
Check the label and SDS first. Our Surrey and Port Moody shops carry industrial parts and chemicals. For more on shop fluids, read our hydraulic oil guide.
